SMASHED – The Nightcap is smashing it in the Square!

Our house cabaret show arrived with a bang on Tuesday and is already turning heads inside and outside the magnificent Spiegeltent. Having now taken its pride of place in Aotea Square, it’s practically unmissable in the central city — and a sure sign the Festival is in full, late summer swing.

“There is something rather special about a Spiegeltent and if you’ve ever been in one you know that you can never quite be sure what you are about to experience,” said Andrew Whiteside of the Festival’s traditional landmark, while Lexie Matheson at Theatreview raved that the tent — our biggest version of the travelling attraction yet — was “absolutely magical.”

Natalya Mandich-Dohnt for 95bFM called SMASHED “a testament to the sheer craftsmanship and talent” of the company and “a raucously good time,” while Matheson reckoned it was “outrageous, exciting, funny, and even a bit tacky, but always in the most tasteful way. Think Prosecco and marshmallows. The performers do things that will quite literally take your breath away.”

On SMASHED’s MC and one and only ‘Daddy’, keepingupwithnz.com wrote “Victoria Falconer, is a true gem,” reserving special praise for her effortless “mixing [of] hosting skills with an impressive array of talents. Halfway through, I realised I wasn’t just watching a witty host – I was witnessing a multi-instrumentalist tour-de-force who could belt out a tune, tickle the ivories, and bust out some rock classics on the accordion. A glamorous triple threat!”

Guests (pictured left-to-right) at Tuesday’s opening night included: Antonia Prebble; Mark Elmore, Chris Tanner and Colin Mathura Jeffree; Mel Homer and Jules Armishaw; Molly Littlejohn and Blaise Clotworthy; and Olivia Reilly and Antonia Aimer.

SMASHED – The Nightcap is only on until Sun 23 March, with performances every night this week and next (except Monday 17 March). Choose your tickets and discover more, or check out more of the action in our video wrap of opening night:
